Fat Dissolving Injections: Realistic Results and Safety

What fat dissolving injections can and can’t do, how many sessions you may need, the side effects, and what UK regulators have said about Lemon Bottle.

Fat dissolving injections can reduce small, stubborn pockets of fat — under the chin or on the tummy, arms or thighs — over a course of sessions, but they are not a weight-loss treatment and results vary. Products such as Lemon Bottle are cosmetic products rather than licensed medicines, so evidence is limited and choosing a careful practitioner matters.

People often ask about fat dissolving when they already exercise and eat well but still have one area that will not shift. That is a completely reasonable thing to want help with. It is also an area of aesthetics where marketing can run ahead of the evidence, so this guide sets out what these injections can realistically do, what can go wrong, and what regulators have said.

What are fat dissolving injections?

Fat dissolving injections deliver a solution into the layer of fat just beneath the skin. The aim is to break down or disrupt fat cells in that small area, which the body then clears gradually through its normal processes, including the lymphatic system. Because the effect is local, the treatment is designed for contouring — refining a shape — rather than reducing overall body weight.

Several products are sold for this purpose. For fat dissolving injections at Skin Anatomy we use Lemon Bottle, a solution whose published formula includes riboflavin (vitamin B2), bromelain (an enzyme from pineapple) and lecithin. Its manufacturer says the formula supports the breakdown of fat. It is marketed as a cosmetic product, not as a licensed medicine, and that has real implications for how much independent evidence exists.

Is Lemon Bottle safe? What UK regulators have said

Every client deserves a straight answer to this question. Here is what is known at the time of writing:

  • It is not a licensed medicine. Lemon Bottle has not been assessed and licensed by the MHRA, the UK medicines regulator, so it has not been through the testing that a licensed medicine requires.
  • Published clinical evidence is limited. There is little independent, peer-reviewed research on this specific product, so claims about how well it works rely heavily on manufacturer information and practitioner experience.
  • Regulators have raised concerns. Swissmedic, the Swiss medicines regulator, issued a public warning about Lemon Bottle in March 2024. In April 2025 the General Pharmaceutical Council warned pharmacies in Great Britain about supplying unlicensed injectable cosmetic products including Lemon Bottle, noting that such products may come with limited or no clinical safety data.
  • Authenticity matters. Products bought cheaply online or through unofficial channels may not be what they claim to be.

None of this means every treatment will cause harm, but it does mean you should go in with realistic expectations and a practitioner who explains the limits of the evidence honestly, records the product and batch used, and knows how to manage side effects. If you would rather avoid injections, a non-invasive option may suit you better.

Who are fat dissolving injections suitable for?

You may be a suitable candidate if you:

  • are 18 or over and at, or close to, a weight that has been stable for a while;
  • have a small, soft pocket of fat you can pinch, rather than widespread fat;
  • have reasonable skin elasticity in the area;
  • understand that change is gradual and that more than one session is usually needed.

Fat dissolving is not suitable if you:

  • are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding;
  • have an infection, broken skin or an active skin condition in the area;
  • are allergic to any ingredient — bromelain comes from pineapple and lecithin is commonly derived from soya, so these allergies must be discussed;
  • have certain medical conditions, such as liver or kidney problems, an autoimmune condition or a bleeding disorder, or take blood-thinning medicines — your medical history decides this;
  • are hoping to lose a significant amount of weight, or mainly have loose skin rather than fat.

Where loose skin is the main concern, skin tightening such as Endolaser may be more appropriate than reducing fat.

Which areas can be treated?

Areas commonly treated include the double chin and lower face, the tummy, love handles and waist, the upper and lower arms, the thighs and the buttocks. Our page on stubborn fat and double chin compares the treatments that can help each area.

Why the under-chin area needs particular care

Fullness under the chin is not always fat. It can come from loose skin, the neck muscle, the salivary glands or the shape of the jaw and chin, and a fat dissolving solution will not help any of those. The area also has nerves and blood vessels close to the surface, including a nerve that controls movement of the lower lip, so treatment needs careful assessment, precise placement and small volumes. A practitioner should examine you properly before suggesting treatment here.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people need a course rather than a single session. A typical plan involves several treatments spaced a few weeks apart, so swelling can settle and the area can be reassessed each time. Smaller areas such as under the chin may need fewer sessions than the abdomen. The number that is right for you depends on the size of the area, how your body responds and what you hope to achieve. We give an honest estimate, and the cost, at your consultation, and prices are listed on our price guide.

What results are realistic?

TimeframeWhat you might notice
First 1–3 daysSwelling, redness and tenderness; the area can look bigger, not smaller
1–2 weeksSwelling settles and any firmness usually softens
2–6 weeks after each sessionGradual, subtle change as the body clears treated fat
Around 6–12 weeks after the final sessionA fairer point to judge the overall result against your starting photographs

Results are modest by design: a softer jawline or a smoother waist contour, not a change of dress size. They also depend on lifestyle. Fat cells that are destroyed are not thought to regenerate, but the fat cells that remain can still enlarge if you gain weight, so keeping your weight stable helps results last.

What are the side effects of fat dissolving injections?

Side effects are usually temporary, but you should know about all of them before you consent:

  • swelling, which can be significant, particularly under the chin;
  • redness, warmth, bruising and tenderness;
  • a stinging or burning sensation during and shortly after injection;
  • itching as the area settles;
  • firm lumps or nodules, which usually soften but occasionally persist;
  • an uneven contour or irregular result;
  • infection, which is uncommon when strict hygiene is followed;
  • allergic reaction, which is rare but can be serious.

Contact your practitioner promptly if you notice spreading redness, increasing pain or heat, discharge from an injection site, a fever, or any change in the movement of your lips or face. If you have difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, call 999.

What is the aftercare?

Advice varies, so follow the written aftercare you are given. Common recommendations include avoiding strenuous exercise, saunas and hot baths for a day or two, not massaging the area unless you have been told to, drinking plenty of water and wearing loose, comfortable clothing over treated body areas. Keep your review appointment so progress can be assessed before any further session.

Can I combine fat dissolving with EMS body sculpting?

Yes, and for some goals the two work well side by side because they do different things. Fat dissolving targets a small pocket of fat, while EMS body sculpting uses HIFEM technology to trigger around 20,000 intense muscle contractions in a 30-minute session, helping to tone and strengthen the muscle underneath. On the abdomen or buttocks, combining them may refine shape in a way neither does alone. Our guide to what 20,000 contractions really do explains EMS in detail, and we will advise on timing between treatments at your consultation.

Questions Answered

Are fat dissolving injections a weight-loss treatment?

No. Fat dissolving injections are designed to refine the contour of a small, stubborn area, such as a double chin or lower tummy, in people who are already at or near a stable weight. They will not reduce overall body weight and are not a substitute for a healthy diet, exercise or medical weight-management support.

How soon will I see results from fat dissolving injections?

Not straight away. The treated area is usually swollen for a few days, so it can look larger at first. Subtle change typically becomes visible over the following weeks, and most people need a course of sessions. Judging the result around six to twelve weeks after the final session gives the fairest picture.

Is Lemon Bottle licensed in the UK?

No. Lemon Bottle is marketed as a cosmetic product and is not a medicine licensed by the MHRA. Independent clinical evidence on the product is limited, and regulators including the General Pharmaceutical Council have raised concerns about unlicensed injectable cosmetic products. A good practitioner will explain this honestly before you decide whether to go ahead.

Can the fat come back after fat dissolving injections?

Fat cells that are destroyed are not thought to regenerate, but the fat cells left in the area and elsewhere can still enlarge if you gain weight. Keeping your weight stable, staying active and eating well gives your results the best chance of lasting, while significant weight gain can reduce the visible improvement.

Can I have fat dissolving injections if I am allergic to pineapple or soya?

Tell your practitioner, because treatment may not be suitable. Lemon Bottle contains bromelain, an enzyme that comes from pineapple, and lecithin, which is commonly derived from soya. A known allergy to any ingredient is a reason not to go ahead, so your full allergy history is checked at consultation.
