About Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in the skin, used to restore lost volume, add definition and soften folds. At Skin Anatomy in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, we use CE-marked fillers in the cheeks, jawline, chin and lower face, with results visible straight away and typically lasting six to eighteen months.
As we age, the face gradually loses volume. Fat pads thin and descend, the underlying structure changes and the skin's natural hyaluronic acid declines, which can flatten the cheeks, soften the jawline and deepen the folds between the nose and mouth. The result is often a tired or sad look that doesn't reflect how you feel. Dermal fillers replace some of that lost support in a controlled, measured way, lifting and defining the areas that have changed.
Our fillers are CE-marked hyaluronic acid (HA) gels. HA occurs naturally in the body and attracts water, so once placed it helps plump and hydrate the treated area. Different fillers have different textures: firmer gels give structure to the cheekbones, chin and jawline, while softer gels suit finer lines around the mouth. We choose the product for each area rather than using one filler for everything, and many contain a local anaesthetic for added comfort.
Good filler work is about balance, not volume for its own sake. Magdalena Wasiewicz assesses your face as a whole, including proportions, symmetry, skin quality and how you move, before suggesting anything. Sometimes a small amount in the cheek softens a fold better than filling the fold itself; sometimes skin boosters or polynucleotides are the better first step. If filler isn't the right answer for you, we will say so.
Because HA filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, a prescription-only enzyme, it is a reversible option if something needs correcting. How complications are managed, including dissolving, is covered openly at your consultation. How it Works
Procedure details
After your consultation, medical history and consent, we photograph and assess the areas to be treated and cleanse the skin thoroughly. Depending on the area, filler is placed with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula, which can reduce bruising in some zones. TargetCool CO2 cooling can be used on injection points, and most fillers contain local anaesthetic. We work gradually, checking symmetry as we go, and gently mould the product. Most appointments take 30 to 60 minutes.

Risks & side effects
Swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising at injection sites are common and usually settle within a few days to a week. Some people notice small lumps or unevenness, which often soften as the filler settles. Less common risks include infection, delayed inflammatory nodules and product moving from where it was placed. Vascular occlusion, where filler blocks a blood vessel, is rare but serious: it can damage the skin and very rarely affect vision. We explain every risk before you consent.
Recovery
Most people return to work the next day, although swelling and bruising can last a few days, so avoid booking just before a big event. Avoid make-up on the area for 12 to 24 hours, and strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and extreme heat or cold for 24 to 48 hours. Sleep on your back the first night if you can, and don't massage the area unless we have asked you to. We review your result at around two weeks.
When to contact us
Contact the clinic immediately if you notice severe or increasing pain, skin that turns white (blanching), dusky, purple or mottled skin, or a patch that feels cold, as these can be early signs of vascular occlusion and need urgent assessment. Get in touch too about swelling that keeps increasing, heat, redness or pus, or hard, painful lumps. Call 999 or go to A&E straight away if you notice any change in your vision.

Step 1: Free consultation
We talk through what you notice when you look in the mirror and what you would like to change. Magdalena assesses your face as a whole and explains which areas and products would help, how much filler is realistically needed, the likely side effects including rare serious risks, and how long results tend to last.
Step 2: Preparation
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand and, where advised, non-prescribed supplements that can increase bruising, such as fish oil. Leave two weeks between filler and dental work or vaccinations. Arrive without make-up if possible, and avoid booking right before an important event, as swelling or bruising can take a few days to settle.
Step 3: Treatment
Your skin is cleansed and photographed, injection points are planned and TargetCool cooling can be used for comfort. Filler is placed gradually with a fine needle or cannula, checking symmetry throughout. Most appointments take 30 to 60 minutes, and you can see the initial result in the mirror before you leave.
Step 4: Aftercare & review
You go home with written aftercare instructions and clear advice on what to watch for. Swelling settles over the following days and the filler integrates over around two weeks, when we review your result. Most people plan maintenance every six to eighteen months, depending on the product, the area and their own metabolism.

How long do dermal fillers last?
Most hyaluronic acid fillers typically last around six to eighteen months. Firmer products used in the cheeks, chin and jawline tend to last longer than softer gels in mobile areas around the mouth. Your metabolism, lifestyle and the amount used also affect how long results last, so we give you a realistic estimate at consultation.
Are dermal fillers safe?
Dermal fillers are widely used and generally well tolerated when placed by a trained practitioner using regulated products, but they do carry risks. We use CE-marked hyaluronic acid fillers, take a full medical history, explain side effects including rare vascular occlusion, and discuss how complications are managed before you decide to go ahead.
Do dermal fillers look natural?
They can look very natural when the right amount is placed in the right areas. Our approach focuses on facial balance, often supporting the structure around a fold rather than overfilling the fold itself. Magdalena will tell you honestly if more filler would not suit your face, and results can be built gradually.
Does getting dermal fillers hurt?
Most clients find filler treatment very manageable. Many fillers contain a local anaesthetic that numbs the area as the product goes in, and we can use TargetCool CO2 skin cooling on injection points. You may feel pressure or a brief sting, and the area can feel tender for a day or two afterwards.
Can dermal fillers be dissolved?
Yes, hyaluronic acid fillers can usually be dissolved with hyaluronidase, a prescription-only enzyme that breaks down the gel. It may be used to correct lumps or unevenness and, urgently, for a suspected vascular occlusion. How dissolving and complications are handled is discussed openly at your consultation, before any treatment takes place.
What is the difference between dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections?
Dermal fillers add volume and structure, while anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles that cause expression lines. Fillers suit folds, flattened cheeks and a softened jawline; anti-wrinkle injections suit frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet. Many faces benefit from a combination, and your consultation explains which approach fits your concerns.
How soon will I see results from dermal fillers?
You will see a difference straight away, although swelling can make the area look fuller at first. Over about two weeks the filler settles and integrates with the tissue, revealing the true result. We invite you back at that point to review and discuss whether any small refinement is needed.
What should I avoid after dermal fillers?
For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas, sunbeds and extreme heat or cold, and don't wear make-up on the area for 12 to 24 hours. Don't massage the area unless advised, and leave dental treatment for two weeks. Contact us urgently for severe pain or skin colour changes.
Can I have dermal fillers if I have had filler elsewhere?
Often yes, but we need to know what was used, where and when. Hyaluronic acid filler from another clinic can usually be assessed and either built on or dissolved if needed. We will not place filler over non-dissolvable synthetic products. Bring any treatment records you have to your free consultation.
