Skin tag, mole and lesion removal is a cosmetic procedure that uses a precise CO2 laser to vaporise benign skin growths layer by layer. Skin tags, benign moles, seborrhoeic keratoses and flat pigmented spots are very common and usually harmless, but they can catch on jewellery, collars and bra straps, bleed when shaving, or simply make you self-conscious. How it Works
Procedure details
Once we have confirmed at consultation that each lesion is suitable, we clean the skin and numb the area so treatment is comfortable. Protective eyewear is worn. The SmartXEL surgical handpiece then vaporises the growth in fine layers until it is level with the surrounding skin, sealing small blood vessels as it goes; skin tags on a stalk are treated at the base. The area is cleaned and a protective ointment applied. Most lesions take only a few minutes each.
Benefits
Laser removal is quick, usually needs just one visit and avoids stitches. The precise beam limits heat to the treated spot, which helps keep the mark small, and sealing of blood vessels means very little bleeding. You can return to normal activities straight away, and removing tags that catch on clothing or jewellery ends the irritation and bleeding they cause. Risks & side effects
Expect a small pink, raw-looking area that forms a scab and heals over one to two weeks. Afterwards the skin may stay pink or slightly lighter or darker than the surrounding skin for several weeks or months. Some clients are left with a small flat mark or, rarely, a scar or indentation. Infection is uncommon if aftercare is followed. Some moles can regrow and need further assessment. Because the tissue is vaporised it cannot be checked in a laboratory, which is why suspicious lesions are always referred to a GP rather than treated.
Recovery
The area may feel slightly tender or warm for a few hours. A small scab forms within a day or two and usually falls away on its own after about 7–14 days, depending on size and location, revealing pink new skin that fades gradually over the following weeks. Keep the area clean, apply the recommended ointment and avoid picking the scab. You can shower normally, but avoid swimming, saunas and heavy sweating on the area until it has healed, and protect it from the sun with SPF50.
When to contact us
Contact the clinic if the treated area becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or painful after the first couple of days, oozes pus, or has not healed after three weeks. Please also get in touch if a treated mole appears to grow back or changes in any way, and see your GP promptly about any other mole or lesion that is new, changing, bleeding or irregular. If you feel unwell with a fever or spreading redness outside clinic hours, contact NHS 111.

Your Skin Tag & Mole Removal journey, step by step
Step 1: Free consultation
Magdalena examines each lesion, asks how long you have had it and whether it has changed, and checks your medical history. If it looks typical of a benign skin tag, mole or keratosis, we explain the treatment, likely healing and any risk of marking. Anything unusual is referred to your GP instead of being treated.
Step 2: Preparing for treatment
Avoid sun exposure and fake tan on the area for a couple of weeks beforehand. Let us know about blood-thinning medication, a tendency to scar, or cold sores if the lesion is near the mouth. Please do not try to cut, tie off or freeze lesions at home before your appointment.
Step 3: Treatment day
The area is cleaned and numbed, and protective eyewear is fitted. The SmartXEL surgical handpiece removes each lesion in fine layers until it is level with the skin, usually taking a few minutes per lesion. We apply a protective ointment and, where helpful, a small dressing before you leave.
Step 4: Aftercare & review
You go home with written aftercare. A small scab forms and falls away naturally after about one to two weeks. We are happy to review healing, and if a mole shows signs of regrowth later we can reassess it. Any change you are unsure about should be checked by your GP.

Looking after your skin
- Keep the area clean and dry for the first 24 hours
- Apply the recommended ointment until the skin has healed
- Let the scab fall away on its own — do not pick or scratch it
- Avoid make-up, fragranced products and shaving directly over the area until healed
- Avoid swimming pools, saunas and hot tubs until the skin has closed
- Protect the healed area from the sun with SPF50 for at least three months
- Contact us if you notice signs of infection or slow healing

Can you remove any mole?
No, we only remove moles that look benign and have been stable. Any mole that is new, changing in size, shape or colour, bleeding, itchy or irregular is referred to your GP. Laser removal vaporises the tissue, so it cannot be tested, and cosmetic removal is never a substitute for a medical check.
Is the removed tissue sent for testing?
No. The laser vaporises the lesion, so there is no sample to send for laboratory analysis. That is why we only treat lesions that look typical of benign growths, and why removal at Skin Anatomy is cosmetic and is not a diagnosis or a skin cancer check.
Does skin tag removal hurt?
Most clients find it very tolerable because the area is numbed first. You may feel some warmth during the laser, which only takes a few minutes per lesion. The area can feel slightly tender afterwards, similar to a small graze, and this usually settles within a day or two.
Will laser removal leave a scar?
Most lesions heal to leave a small pink or pale mark that fades over time, but any removal carries some risk of a visible mark. Larger or deeper lesions, and people prone to keloid scarring, have a higher risk. Following aftercare, not picking the scab and using SPF all help the area heal neatly.
How long does it take to heal after skin tag or mole removal?
Most treated areas heal within about 7–14 days. A small scab forms and falls away on its own, revealing pink new skin that gradually blends in over several weeks. Healing can take a little longer on the back, legs and body, or for larger lesions.
How many skin tags can be removed in one appointment?
Several skin tags can usually be removed in a single appointment. The number depends on their size, location and how comfortable you feel, and we agree a plan at your consultation. Very large numbers may be split across two visits to keep treatment comfortable and healing manageable.
Can a mole grow back after laser removal?
Occasionally, yes. Skin tags rarely return, but some moles have pigment cells deeper in the skin that can regrow, sometimes leaving a faint colour. If this happens the area should be reassessed, and any regrowth that looks different from the original mole should be checked by your GP.
What is a seborrhoeic keratosis?
A seborrhoeic keratosis is a common, harmless skin growth that looks warty, waxy or stuck on, ranging from light brown to black, and becomes more common with age. Although benign, they can resemble other lesions, so we assess each one carefully and refer anything uncertain to your GP.
