CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing

After cleansing, a topical anaesthetic is applied and left to take effect while we photograph your skin and confirm the treatment plan. Protective eyewear is fitted, then the SmartXEL handpiece is passed methodically over each area. You will hear a clicking sound and feel pulses of warmth. The laser creates a grid of microscopic channels while the second pulse heats the deeper layer to stimulate collagen. Afterwards we cool the skin to settle the heat quickly and apply a soothing barrier product before you go home.

Fractional CO2 is a well-established way to improve skin texture and scarring without surgery, because it works on both the surface and the deeper dermis. Clients typically see smoother texture, softer lines, less noticeable pores, fewer visible sun spots and a brighter, more even complexion, with firmer-feeling skin as new collagen forms. Many concerns improve with one or two sessions, and results look natural because they come from your own collagen rather than added product.

Redness, swelling, warmth and a sunburn-like feeling are expected for the first few days, followed by roughness and flaking as treated skin exfoliates. Less common effects include prolonged redness, acne flare-ups, milia (tiny white bumps), reactivation of cold sores and temporary darkening of the skin (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), which is more likely in deeper skin tones and after sun exposure. Infection, lasting lightening of the skin and scarring are rare. We assess your skin type and history carefully and adjust settings or advise preparation to reduce these risks.

Days 1–3: skin looks red and feels warm, like sunburn, and may be swollen, especially around the eyes. Days 4–6: skin feels rough, like fine sandpaper, as microscopic treated areas flake away. Days 7–10: the rough layer sheds to reveal smoother, fresher skin, which may stay pink for a little longer. Most people return to normal, non-strenuous activity after 1–2 days and can wear mineral make-up after a couple of days, but many prefer to plan a quieter week.

Contact Skin Anatomy promptly if you notice increasing pain, heat or swelling after the first 48 hours, yellow crusting, pus or an unpleasant smell, blisters, cold-sore-like spots, or redness that is getting worse rather than better. Please also get in touch if dark patches appear as your skin heals, so we can advise early.
