Practitioner giving an anti-wrinkle injection to the forehead in the treatment room

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Soften frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet for a rested, natural look. Every treatment at our Southwell clinic starts with a face-to-face consultation with a qualified prescriber and is planned around your own features and expressions.

About Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription-only treatment that temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause expression lines, such as frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet. At Skin Anatomy in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, treatment follows a face-to-face consultation with a qualified prescriber, and results typically appear within two weeks and last around three to four months.

Anti-wrinkle injections are one of the core treatments at Skin Anatomy. Tiny, precise amounts of a prescription-only medicine are placed into specific facial muscles to relax the repeated movement that folds the skin into lines. As muscle activity softens, the skin above it has a chance to smooth out, so dynamic lines look less pronounced and existing creases are less likely to deepen. Used well, the result is not a frozen face but a fresher, more rested version of your own expressions.

Because this is a prescription-only medicine, UK rules are clear: before your first treatment you must have a face-to-face consultation with a qualified prescriber. They take a full medical history, look at how your face moves, discuss your goals and decide whether treatment is appropriate for you. Only then can a prescription be issued. We never offer anti-wrinkle injections on a walk-in basis, and we do not treat anyone under 18, in line with UK law.

Magdalena Wasiewicz, our Founder and Lead Aesthetic Practitioner, has looked after many long-standing clients, and her approach is honest and conservative. If a stronger or heavier-looking result would not suit your facial balance, she will tell you. Plans are built around your natural expressions, the shape of your brows and the way your face is changing, so you still look like yourself, just less tired, less stern or less frowning.

Beyond facial lines, anti-wrinkle injections can also be used, after careful assessment, to slim a square jaw caused by an overactive masseter muscle, to give a subtle lip flip, or to reduce excessive underarm sweating. Our clinic at 17 Queen Street, Southwell sits between Nottingham, Mansfield and Newark-on-Trent, so clients travel from across Nottinghamshire for their consultation, treatment and review.

How it Works

Procedure details

After your prescriber consultation and consent, your skin is cleansed and the injection points are marked while you make expressions such as frowning or raising your brows. Very fine needles are used to place small, measured doses into the chosen muscles. Where helpful, TargetCool CO2 skin cooling is applied just before each injection for extra comfort. Treating one to three areas usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, and you leave with only small marks or bumps that settle quickly.

Benefits

The main benefit is a softer, more relaxed appearance without surgery or significant downtime. Frown lines can look less severe, horizontal forehead lines less etched and crow's feet smoother when you smile. Because repeated folding of the skin is reduced, regular treatment may help slow the deepening of lines over time. Results build gradually rather than overnight, most people return to normal activities the same day, and the effect wears off naturally, so treatment can be adjusted at each visit.

Risks & side effects

Most side effects are mild and short-lived: pinprick marks, redness, small raised bumps at the injection points, tenderness, bruising or a headache. Less commonly, the medicine can affect nearby muscles and cause a temporary heaviness or droop of the brow or eyelid, or an uneven result. Flu-like symptoms and allergic reactions are rare. These effects are temporary but can last several weeks, which is why your prescriber discusses them fully before you consent and why we review you at around two weeks.

Recovery

There is usually no real downtime. Stay upright for about four hours, avoid touching, rubbing or massaging the treated areas, and skip strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and alcohol for 24 hours. Any small bumps usually fade within an hour, and a bruise, if one appears, can be covered with make-up the next day. The effect starts to show after about three to five days and reaches its full result at around two weeks, when we invite you back for a review.

When to contact us

Contact the clinic straight away if you notice a drooping eyelid or brow, bruising or swelling that is getting worse, signs of infection such as heat, spreading redness or pus, or any result that worries you. We would always rather hear from you early. Seek urgent medical help by calling 999 or going to A&E if you develop difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, widespread muscle weakness, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Your Anti-Wrinkle Injections journey, step by step

  1. Step 1: Free consultation

Start with a free, no-obligation chat at our Southwell clinic about the lines that bother you and what you hope to achieve. We explain how anti-wrinkle injections work, what they can and cannot do, the likely side effects and how long results tend to last, so you can decide in your own time and without any pressure.

  2. Step 2: Prescriber assessment & preparation

Before a first treatment you meet a qualified prescriber face to face. They review your medical history, medicines and allergies, assess how your face moves and agree a plan. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand and, where advised, non-prescribed supplements that can increase bruising, such as fish oil. Never stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

  3. Step 3: Treatment

Your skin is cleansed, injection points are marked and TargetCool cooling can be used for comfort. Small, precise doses are placed with a very fine needle. The appointment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, and most people head straight back to work or home with only faint marks that fade within the hour.

  4. Step 4: Aftercare & two-week review

You leave with written aftercare advice and know exactly how to reach us. The effect builds over three to five days and settles fully by around two weeks, when we invite you back to review the result and discuss any fine-tuning. Most clients choose to repeat treatment every three to four months as movement gradually returns.

TargetCool CO2 skin cooling device used at Skin Anatomy for comfort during injectable treatments

TargetCool CO2 skin cooling

TargetCool is a precise, portable medical device that uses controlled CO2 cooling to chill a small, targeted area of skin in seconds. Applied just before each injection point, it helps take the edge off the sensation of the needle, which many clients find reassuring if they feel nervous about injections. Because the cooling is controlled and focused, only the spot being treated is chilled, so your appointment stays quick and comfortable without waiting for numbing cream to work.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections: your questions answered

Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?

Anti-wrinkle injections have a long track record when prescribed appropriately and given by a trained practitioner, but no medical treatment is completely free of risk. That is why every client has a face-to-face consultation with a qualified prescriber first, who checks your medical history, explains the side effects and only prescribes if treatment is suitable for you.

Do I need a consultation before anti-wrinkle injections?

Yes. Anti-wrinkle injections use a prescription-only medicine, so UK rules require a face-to-face consultation with a qualified prescriber before your first treatment. They take your medical history, assess your facial movement and decide whether to prescribe. We never treat on a walk-in basis, and the initial chat about your goals at our clinic is free.

How long do anti-wrinkle injections take to work?

Most people start to notice a softening after about three to five days, with the full effect at around two weeks. Because results build gradually, nobody sees a sudden change. We ask you to wait until your two-week review before judging the final result or considering any adjustment.

How long do anti-wrinkle injections last?

Results typically last around three to four months, although this varies from person to person. Muscle strength, metabolism, the area treated, the dose and how expressive you are all make a difference. As the effect wears off, movement returns gradually, and many clients book their next appointment when lines start to reappear.

Do anti-wrinkle injections hurt?

Most clients describe the injections as a quick scratch or pinch that lasts a moment. Very fine needles are used, and we can apply TargetCool CO2 skin cooling to the area just before each injection to make treatment more comfortable. The whole appointment for one to three areas usually takes less than half an hour.

Will I look frozen after anti-wrinkle injections?

Not if treatment is planned carefully. Our aim is a natural, rested look where you can still smile and show expression. Magdalena doses conservatively around your own features and will tell you honestly if a stronger result would not suit you. The two-week review gives us the chance to fine-tune if needed.

What areas can anti-wrinkle injections treat?

The most common areas are frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet around the eyes. After assessment, they can also be used for jaw slimming where the masseter muscle is enlarged, for a subtle lip flip and for excessive underarm sweating. Your prescriber advises what is appropriate for you.

Is there any downtime after anti-wrinkle injections?

There is very little downtime, and most people return to work the same day. You may have small bumps or redness for an hour or so and occasionally a bruise. Stay upright for about four hours and avoid exercise, saunas, alcohol and rubbing the treated areas for 24 hours.

Can I have anti-wrinkle injections if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. We do not offer anti-wrinkle injections during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as safety has not been established. We also do not treat anyone under 18. If you are planning a pregnancy, mention it at your consultation so the timing of any treatment can be discussed.
