Lip Fillers

Add subtle hydration, shape and definition with hyaluronic acid lip filler, planned around the proportions of your face. At our Southwell clinic we build results gradually and honestly, so your lips still look like yours, only better balanced.

About Lip Fillers

Lip fillers are injections of hyaluronic acid gel that add hydration, shape, definition and subtle volume to the lips. At Skin Anatomy in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, small amounts are placed to suit your facial proportions, often starting with half a millilitre. Results are visible straight away, settle over about two weeks and typically last six to twelve months.

Lips naturally lose volume, definition and hydration over time, and many people simply feel their lips are thin, uneven or out of proportion with the rest of their face. Lip filler uses a soft hyaluronic acid (HA) gel to address exactly that. It can restore a crisp border, improve symmetry between the upper and lower lip, soften fine lines around the mouth and add a gentle, hydrated fullness, without the overfilled look that gives lip filler a bad name.

Our approach is proportion first. Magdalena Wasiewicz looks at your lip shape, the balance between upper and lower lip, your teeth and smile, and the rest of your face before recommending an amount. Many clients start with 0.5ml or 1ml and build gradually over time. If you ask for a much fuller look than would suit your features, she will explain why honestly and suggest something that keeps you looking like yourself.

HA occurs naturally in the body and attracts water, which is why treated lips often look smoother and more hydrated as well as fuller. We use CE-marked fillers designed for the lips, many of which contain a local anaesthetic, and can add TargetCool CO2 skin cooling for comfort. Because HA filler can be dissolved with a prescription-only enzyme, it is a reversible choice, and how complications are handled is discussed at consultation.

Lip fillers are only offered to adults aged 18 and over, in line with UK law, and we may ask to see photo identification at your appointment. Our clinic at 17 Queen Street, Southwell is a short drive from Newark-on-Trent, Nottingham, Mansfield and Bingham, so it's easy to fit your free consultation, treatment and two-week review around work, school runs and family life.

How it Works

Procedure details

After your consultation and consent, we photograph your lips, agree the plan in the mirror and cleanse the area. Many lip fillers contain local anaesthetic, and TargetCool CO2 cooling can be applied to the injection points. Filler is placed in tiny amounts with a fine needle or cannula into the border, body or corners of the lips as planned, checking symmetry at every stage. We gently mould the product and show you the initial result. The appointment usually takes around 45 minutes.

Benefits

Lip filler can add subtle volume, define the border, improve symmetry, gently support down-turned corners and soften fine vertical lines above the lip. Treated lips often look and feel more hydrated because HA draws in water. Results can be tailored precisely: a hydration-focused treatment for mature lips, a touch of shape for naturally thin lips, or correction of unevenness. Because volume is built gradually, you stay in control of how your lips look over time.

Risks & side effects

Swelling is expected and can be marked for 24 to 72 hours, especially the morning after treatment; it settles over several days. Bruising, tenderness and small lumps are common and usually temporary. Filler can occasionally move beyond the lip border (migration), and lumps or asymmetry may need review. Lip treatment can trigger a cold sore in people prone to them. Vascular occlusion is rare but serious: it can damage skin and very rarely affect vision, which is why placement is careful and slow.

Recovery

Most people feel comfortable going about their day, but lips can look noticeably swollen at first, so avoid booking just before an event. For 24 hours avoid kissing, drinking through straws, very hot drinks, alcohol and strenuous exercise, and skip lipstick or lip products until the next day. Swelling usually peaks within the first two days and fades over the week. The final shape shows at around two weeks, when we invite you back for a review.

When to contact us

Contact the clinic immediately if you notice severe or increasing pain, lip skin that turns white, dusky, purple or mottled, or an area that feels cold, as these can signal vascular occlusion and need urgent attention. Get in touch too for swelling that keeps worsening after three days, heat, spreading redness or pus, blisters or a cold sore, or hard, painful lumps. Call 999 or go to A&E straight away for any change in your vision.

Your Lip Fillers journey, step by step

  1. Step 1: Free consultation

We talk about what you like and dislike about your lips, look at reference photos if you have them, and assess your proportions honestly. Magdalena explains what is realistic, how much filler might suit you, the likely swelling and side effects, rare serious risks and how long results tend to last, so you can decide without pressure.

  2. Step 2: Preparation

If you get cold sores, tell us early, as treatment may need planning around an outbreak. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours beforehand and leave two weeks between filler and any dental treatment. Try not to book lip filler just before a holiday, wedding or big event, because swelling can be noticeable for a couple of days.

  3. Step 3: Treatment

Your lips are photographed and cleansed, and TargetCool cooling can be used alongside the numbing in the filler. Tiny amounts are placed and moulded step by step, with regular mirror checks so you can see progress. Most appointments take around 45 minutes, including time to talk through your aftercare.

  4. Step 4: Aftercare & review

Expect swelling for 24 to 72 hours, often most noticeable the next morning. Follow your written aftercare, avoid kissing, straws, hot drinks and exercise for a day, and contact us with any concerns. We review your lips at around two weeks, once they have settled, and results typically last six to twelve months.

TargetCool CO2 skin cooling device used at Skin Anatomy for comfort during injectable treatments

TargetCool CO2 skin cooling

TargetCool is a precise, portable medical device that uses controlled CO2 cooling to chill a small, targeted area of skin within seconds. The lips are one of the most sensitive areas of the face, so we can apply TargetCool to each injection point alongside the local anaesthetic contained in many lip fillers. Cooling is focused exactly where it is needed, helping treatment feel calmer and more comfortable without waiting for numbing cream to take effect.

Lip Fillers prices

Every treatment starts with a free, no-obligation consultation. Prices include VAT; where a price is shown as “from”, your exact cost depends on your assessment and is confirmed before you book.

Lip Fillers: your questions answered

How long do lip fillers last?

Lip fillers typically last around six to twelve months. The lips move constantly, so filler tends to break down faster there than in the cheeks or chin. Your metabolism, the product used and the amount placed all play a part, and many clients book a small top-up once they notice the result fading.

How much lip filler should I have?

Most first-time clients start with 0.5ml or 1ml, which is enough for a visible but natural change. The right amount depends on your lip shape, facial proportions and goals. We would rather build gradually over appointments than overfill, and we will be honest if the amount you ask for would not suit you.

Do lip fillers hurt?

Lips are sensitive, but most clients find treatment very manageable. Many lip fillers contain a local anaesthetic that numbs the area as it is injected, and we can use TargetCool CO2 skin cooling on each injection point. You may feel brief stings and pressure, and your lips can feel tender for a day or two.

How long does lip filler swelling last?

Swelling is normal and usually most noticeable for 24 to 72 hours, often peaking the morning after treatment. It then settles gradually over the week. Bruising, if it happens, can take a little longer to fade. Your lips show their final shape at around two weeks, which is when we review them.

Will my lip fillers look natural?

They should, because our focus is proportion rather than size. We plan lip filler around your facial balance, the ratio between your upper and lower lip and your smile. Small amounts are placed gradually and moulded carefully. If a much fuller look would not suit your features, we will explain why and suggest an alternative.

Can lip fillers be dissolved?

Yes, hyaluronic acid lip fillers can usually be dissolved with hyaluronidase, a prescription-only enzyme. It may be used to correct lumps, migration or unevenness, and urgently if a blood vessel is thought to be blocked. How complications and dissolving are managed is explained at your consultation, before any treatment.

Can I have lip fillers if I get cold sores?

Often yes, but you should tell us at your consultation. Injecting the lips can trigger a cold sore in people who are prone to them, so treatment may need to be timed away from an outbreak. We never treat while a cold sore or any infection is active on or around the lips.

What should I avoid after lip fillers?

For the first 24 hours, avoid kissing, drinking through straws, very hot drinks, alcohol, strenuous exercise and lip products. Avoid saunas and sunbeds for 48 hours and dental treatment for two weeks. Contact us immediately if you have severe pain or the skin of your lips looks pale, dusky or mottled.

Is there an age limit for lip fillers?

Yes. Lip fillers are only available to adults aged 18 and over, in line with UK law that prohibits cosmetic filler treatments for anyone under 18, and we may ask for identification. There is no upper age limit, as filler can also restore hydration and definition to mature lips.
