Skin Boosters

Deep, long-lasting hydration from within. Skin boosters use fine injections of hyaluronic acid to improve texture, softness and radiance, so skin looks fresher and more supple without changing your features. Planned for you at our Southwell clinic.

About Skin Boosters

Skin boosters are injectable treatments that place tiny amounts of hyaluronic acid and revitalising compounds into the upper layers of the skin to improve hydration, texture and radiance. Unlike fillers, they do not add volume. At Skin Anatomy in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, we choose the booster that suits your skin at a free consultation.

Healthy-looking skin depends on water. Hyaluronic acid (HA) occurs naturally in the body and works like a moisture magnet, holding water in the skin so it looks plump, smooth and bright. From our mid-twenties our natural HA levels begin to fall, and sun exposure, central heating, stress and hormonal changes all speed things up. The result is skin that can feel tight, look dull and show fine lines and crepey texture earlier than it should, even with a good skincare routine.

Skin boosters replace some of that lost hydration from the inside. Rather than sitting on the surface like a moisturiser, the booster is placed with a series of tiny, superficial injections into the upper layer of the skin. The lightweight HA molecules draw in and hold moisture where it is needed, and the blend of revitalising compounds in many boosters is designed to support the skin's own collagen, elasticity and overall quality over the following weeks.

Skin boosters are not the same as dermal fillers. Fillers use a more structured gel to restore volume and shape in specific areas such as the cheeks or lips. Boosters are spread evenly across a whole area in very small amounts, so they improve the quality of the skin itself without changing your features or making you look 'done'. Many clients describe the result as their skin simply looking healthier, softer and more rested.

At Skin Anatomy we use a range of skin boosters, and the product is chosen for you at your free consultation with Magdalena Wasiewicz, our Founder and Lead Aesthetic Practitioner. The choice depends on your skin type, your concerns and the area being treated: the face, neck, décolletage and backs of the hands all respond well. Boosters also combine nicely with other treatments, such as polynucleotides for thin under-eye skin or CO2 laser resurfacing for texture and pigmentation.

How it Works

Procedure details

After cleansing, numbing cream is applied and left to work while we talk through the plan. We use TargetCool CO2 skin cooling during the injections for extra comfort. Using a very fine needle or cannula, small amounts of booster are placed just beneath the surface in a grid pattern across the treatment area. Depending on the product, you may notice small raised bumps at each point; these are the booster settling in and usually flatten within a day or two. A full face typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, including preparation.

Benefits

The main benefit is deeper, longer-lasting hydration than skincare alone can provide. Most clients notice skin that feels softer and looks more radiant within one to two weeks, with smoother texture and fewer visible fine lines as the course progresses. Because boosters improve skin quality rather than adding volume, results look natural. They can also help crepey skin on the neck and hands, improve how make-up sits on the skin, and create a healthy base that helps other treatments work well. Results vary from person to person.

Risks & side effects

Skin boosters are a low-downtime treatment, but as with any injection there are side effects to know about. Redness, mild swelling, tenderness and small bumps at the injection points are common and usually settle within 24 to 48 hours. Bruising can occur and may last up to a week. Less commonly, lumps, prolonged swelling, infection or an allergic reaction to an ingredient can happen, and very rarely product can affect a blood vessel. We take a full medical history, use strict hygiene to reduce these risks and explain them fully before you consent.

Recovery

Most people return to work and normal routines straight away, although you may prefer a quiet evening while any bumps settle. Avoid make-up for 12 hours, and avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, alcohol and facial massage for 24 to 48 hours. Sleep with your head slightly raised on the first night if you are prone to swelling. Hydration continues to improve over the following weeks, which is why a course of two to three sessions about four weeks apart usually gives the best result.

When to contact us

Contact us straight away if you notice pain that is increasing rather than settling, skin that turns pale, blotchy, grey or dusky, spreading redness, heat or swelling, or signs of infection such as pus or a raised temperature. Please also get in touch if lumps have not settled after two weeks, or if you have any concerns at all; we would always rather hear from you. If you have difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, call 999 immediately.

Your Skin Boosters journey, step by step

  1. Step 1: Free consultation

Your journey begins with a free, no-obligation consultation in Southwell. We look closely at your skin, discuss your goals and lifestyle, take a full medical history and explain which booster we recommend and why. You will know how many sessions to expect, what the treatment feels like and how your skin is likely to respond before you decide.

  2. Step 2: Preparing for treatment

For a few days beforehand, avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers, fish oil and alcohol where medically safe, as these can increase bruising. Let us know about any cold sores, recent illness or new medication. Arrive with clean skin if possible, and avoid planning a big event in the two days after your appointment in case of small bumps or bruising.

  3. Step 3: Treatment day

We cleanse your skin, apply numbing cream and use TargetCool skin cooling for comfort. The booster is placed with a series of fine, superficial injections across the area, which takes around 15 to 20 minutes. You may see small bumps straight afterwards; these are normal and usually settle within 24 to 48 hours.

  4. Step 4: Aftercare & review

You go home with written aftercare advice and our contact details. Your next session is usually booked around four weeks later, and we review how your skin has responded at each visit. Once your course is complete, most clients return for a maintenance session roughly every six months to keep hydration topped up.

TargetCool CO2 skin cooling device used at Skin Anatomy for comfort during injectable treatments

TargetCool CO2 skin cooling

At Skin Anatomy we use TargetCool, a precise, portable medical device that uses controlled CO2 cooling to chill a small, targeted area of skin just before and during needle-based treatments. Cooling the skin in this way has a numbing effect, so most clients find skin booster injections much more comfortable, especially on sensitive areas. Because the cooling is controlled and targeted, it can be applied exactly where the next injection will be placed without making the whole face cold.

Skin Boosters: your questions answered

What do skin boosters do?

Skin boosters deeply hydrate the skin from within, improving texture, softness and radiance. They place tiny amounts of hyaluronic acid just below the surface, where it attracts and holds water. Over a course of treatments, many clients also notice fewer fine lines and a firmer, more elastic feel as the quality of their skin improves.

Are skin boosters the same as dermal fillers?

No, skin boosters are not the same as dermal fillers. Both use hyaluronic acid, but fillers are designed to add volume and shape to specific areas, while boosters are spread in small amounts across the skin to improve hydration and quality. Boosters will not change the shape of your face or lips.

How long do skin boosters last?

Results from a course of skin boosters typically last around six months, although this varies with your age, skin, lifestyle and the product used. Most clients have two to three initial sessions about four weeks apart, then a single maintenance session roughly every six months to keep their skin hydrated.

Do skin booster injections hurt?

Most clients find skin boosters very manageable. We apply numbing cream beforehand and use TargetCool CO2 skin cooling during the injections to reduce discomfort. You may feel small scratches and a little pressure, and the skin can feel tender for a day or so afterwards. Comfort levels vary from person to person.

When will I see results from skin boosters?

Most people notice softer, more radiant skin within one to two weeks of their first session, once any small bumps have settled. The improvement builds with each treatment in the course, and many clients see their best results around four weeks after their final session. Results vary between individuals.

Is there any downtime after skin boosters?

Downtime after skin boosters is usually minimal. Small bumps, redness and mild swelling are common for 24 to 48 hours, and some people bruise. Most clients return to work the same day, but we suggest avoiding important events for a couple of days and following our aftercare advice on exercise, make-up and alcohol.

Skin boosters or polynucleotides — which is right for me?

The right choice depends on what your skin needs most. Skin boosters focus on hydration, glow and smoothness, while polynucleotides focus on supporting repair and strengthening thin, crepey or fragile skin, particularly under the eyes. Many clients benefit from combining both, and we recommend the right plan at your free consultation.

Can skin boosters be used on the neck and hands?

Yes, skin boosters can be used on the neck, décolletage and backs of the hands as well as the face. These areas often show dryness and crepey texture early because the skin is thinner. We tailor the product and the number of injection points to each area at your consultation.
