EMS body sculpting is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to make muscles contract far more intensely than voluntary exercise allows. Over a course of sessions this can improve strength, tone and definition in the abdomen, buttocks, arms and thighs. Skin Anatomy offers it in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, with no downtime.
EMS body sculpting, also known as EMS body contouring, is a non-surgical way to work your muscles harder than training alone can. Whether you want a firmer, more defined stomach, a lifted and shapelier bottom or stronger arms and legs, the treatment is carried out while you lie comfortably on a treatment couch. There are no needles, no anaesthetic and no recovery period, so it fits easily into a busy week, and it is suitable for both men and women.
The device uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology. Two applicator panels are secured over the area with a band, and electromagnetic pulses pass through the skin and fat to reach the muscle beneath. These pulses cause supramaximal contractions, which are stronger than the contractions your brain can trigger voluntarily. According to the manufacturer, a single 30-minute session delivers around 20,000 of these contractions, a workload that would be impossible to match with sit-ups or squats.
Muscles respond to this intense stimulation much as they would to demanding training, gradually adapting by becoming stronger, denser and more toned. The manufacturer also reports that the intense activity may help to reduce fat in the treated area, although individual results vary and the treatment is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise. A course of four to six sessions spaced a few days apart is typical, with results continuing to develop in the weeks after your final session.
Some clients use EMS to help rebuild tone after a period of reduced activity. If you are recovering from an injury, surgery or pregnancy, please check with your GP or physiotherapist before booking. For clients with stubborn pockets of fat as well as weaker muscle tone, we can combine EMS with fat dissolving injections as part of a personalised plan at our Southwell clinic, which is convenient for Nottingham, Newark-on-Trent and Mansfield.
You lie on a treatment couch in light, comfortable clothing, having removed any jewellery, phone or other metal and electronic items. We position two applicator panels over the area and secure them with a band, then increase the intensity gradually to a level that feels strong but manageable. For around 30 minutes the device delivers bursts of electromagnetic pulses, producing waves of powerful muscle contractions with short pauses in between. Afterwards the panels are removed and you can carry on with your day.
EMS body sculpting is non-invasive, involves no needles or anaesthetic and has no downtime. The contractions work the muscle at an intensity voluntary exercise cannot reach, which can improve tone, strength and definition in the abdomen, buttocks, arms, thighs and hamstrings. Many clients find it a useful boost alongside their usual training, and it can be combined with other body contouring treatments to address stubborn fat. Sessions are short, so they fit easily around work and family life.
EMS is generally well tolerated. The most common effect is muscle soreness or aching for a day or two, similar to a hard workout. Some people notice temporary redness or warmth of the skin under the applicator. Muscle cramps or discomfort during treatment can occur, and we can reduce the intensity at any time. The treatment must not be used with pacemakers, implanted electronic devices or metal implants near the area, so we check your medical history carefully before every course.
There is no recovery period, so you can drive, work and exercise as normal after treatment. Your muscles may ache for a day or two, and drinking plenty of water and gentle stretching can help. Results build gradually: many clients notice a firmer feeling during the course, with further changes over the weeks after the final session. Staying active, eating well and considering occasional maintenance sessions will help you keep the benefits for longer.
Please contact the clinic if muscle pain is severe or lasts longer than a few days, if you notice unusual swelling or skin changes in the treated area, or if you develop any new symptoms after a session. Let us know before your next appointment if you become pregnant, have surgery, or are fitted with any implant or electronic device. If you experience chest pain, palpitations or breathlessness, seek urgent medical help by calling 999.

Treatments are for adults aged 18 and over. We check your medical history at your consultation and will always tell you honestly if a treatment isn’t right for you.
We confirm which areas are suitable for you at your free consultation.
Your journey starts with a free consultation at our Southwell clinic. We discuss your goals, activity levels and medical history, check for implants or conditions that would make EMS unsuitable, and agree which areas to focus on. We also explain how many sessions are typical and what results you can realistically expect.
Wear light, comfortable clothing and be ready to remove jewellery, phones, watches and any other metal or electronic items. Drink plenty of water beforehand and avoid a heavy meal just before abdominal treatment. If you have had a recent injury, surgery or pregnancy, please check with your GP or physiotherapist that you can go ahead.
You lie back on the couch while we secure the applicator panels over the area. We increase the intensity gradually to a strong but tolerable level, and for around 30 minutes the device delivers powerful contractions. You can talk to us throughout, and we adjust the intensity whenever you need.
You can return to normal activities straight away. Most courses involve four to six sessions spaced two to three days apart, and we review your progress, photographs and measurements as you go. Results continue to develop in the weeks after your course, and we can advise on maintenance sessions to help keep the benefits.

HIFEM stands for high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy. Rather than passing an electrical current through pads on the skin, the device creates a focused electromagnetic field that travels through skin and fat to stimulate the nerves that control the muscle. This produces supramaximal contractions, which the manufacturer states number around 20,000 in a 30-minute session. The muscle adapts to this extreme workload by strengthening and toning over the weeks that follow, with results that vary from person to person.
Every treatment starts with a free, no-obligation consultation. Prices include VAT; where a price is shown as “from”, your exact cost depends on your assessment and is confirmed before you book.
