The Real Cost Drivers of Aluminium Windows in the UK
Why do aluminium window quotes vary so much? The nine factors that actually move the price — and how to spec smart without cutting quality.

Two aluminium window quotes for the same house can differ by half, and both can be honestly priced. The reason is that "aluminium windows" describes a huge specification space: size and count, opening style, thermal tier, glazing build-up, finish, hardware, security testing, survey and installation complexity all move the number — most of them more than people expect. This guide walks through each driver so you can read a quotation line by line and spend where it counts.
1. Size, and how the area is divided
Bigger windows cost more — but so, counterintuitively, do more windows. Every opening carries fixed costs: fabrication, hardware, glazing units, sealing and fitting time. Ten small windows usually cost more than four larger ones covering the same glass area. If you are designing from scratch, fewer, larger openings buy more daylight per pound.
2. Opening style
A fixed pane is the cheapest square metre of glazing you can buy: no hinges, no locks, no moving parts. Casements and tilt-turns add hardware and fabrication; tilt-turns carry the most complex gearing. A practical trick from the trade: mix fixed and opening lights. A wide elevation rarely needs every pane to open — combining fixed panels with one or two opening casements or tilt-turns keeps ventilation and escape routes while trimming real cost.
3. Thermal tier
Within one manufacturer's range, the ladder runs from slim thermally broken systems that meet Building Regulations, up to passive-grade platforms with wide multi-chamber polyamide breaks and deeper profiles. Each step down in U-value costs more in material and engineering. The right rung depends on the project: a whole-house renovation you'll heat for thirty years justifies a better tier than a garage conversion — our U-value guide covers where the extra insulation genuinely pays back.
4. Glazing build-up
The default is a good double-glazed unit with low-E coating, argon fill and warm-edge spacers. From there, each addition is a line on the quote: triple glazing (more glass, gas and weight), acoustic laminates for road or flight-path noise, solar-control coatings for south-facing glass walls, obscure glass, and toughened or laminated safety glass where regulations require it near doors and floors. On large panes, glass is often the single biggest cost line — glazing choices matter more as windows grow.
5. Finish
Standard powder-coat colours (whites, greys, blacks, anthracite) are the baseline. Non-stock RAL shades, textured and matt premium finishes, anodising, wood-effect and dual-colour frames (one colour outside, another inside) each add a margin. The finish is also the wrong place to economise badly: a marine-grade or premium coating on a coastal or exposed site protects the frame for decades and is covered by longer guarantees.
6. Security and testing
PAS 24-tested windows and doors — required on new builds and sensible everywhere — carry tested hardware, reinforced keeps and often laminated glass. Upgraded cylinders, hinge-side security and smart locks on entrance doors all appear as hardware lines. They are cheap insurance relative to the cost of the opening they protect.
7. Shape, colour of the project, and the awkward ones
Arched heads, rakes, corner windows without a post, oversized sashes and heritage glazing-bar grids all take extra fabrication and sometimes structural engineering. One awkward window can cost as much as three straightforward ones — worth knowing when you decide which features of a design you love enough to keep.
8. Survey, access and installation
Ground-floor replacements into sound openings are the easy case. Scaffolding, upper floors with no access, structural alterations, wide-span lintels, making good around reveals, and disposal of old frames all add site cost. This is also where the cheapest quote most often hides its savings — a proper survey, correct fixings, insulated packers and airtight sealing around the frame decide whether the window performs to its datasheet at all.
9. Who is doing the work
Supply-only to a competent builder, supply through an approved fabricator, or a fully installed and guaranteed package are different products at different prices. Insurance-backed guarantees, FENSA/certified installation paperwork for building control, and an installer who will still exist in year ten have real value; make sure quotes you compare include the same scope.
Timing and market factors
Beyond your specification, the market moves prices too. Aluminium is a globally traded commodity, so raw profile costs track the metal price with a lag; energy prices feed into both extrusion and glass manufacture; and installer demand is seasonal, with spring and early summer the busiest booking periods. None of this is under your control, but two things are: quotations are typically held for a fixed period (ours state their validity clearly), and installers often have better availability — and sharper pricing — for autumn and winter fitting slots. If your project is flexible, asking about off-peak installation is a legitimate lever.
Questions that keep a quote honest
- Is the U-value quoted whole-window (Uw) for my sizes, or a brochure best case?
- Which EN classes for air, water and wind does this exact configuration carry?
- What is included in installation — disposal, making good, trims, building-control certification?
- What exactly do the guarantees cover (profile, finish, hardware, glazed units), for how long, and are they insurance-backed and transferable?
- How long is the quotation valid, and what is the current lead time from survey?
How to spec smart
- Fix the panes that never need to open; spend the hardware budget on the ones that do.
- Buy the thermal tier for the building's future, not just today's regulations.
- Put glazing upgrades where they work: acoustic glass on the road side, solar control on the south side — not everywhere by default.
- Never strip out survey and installation quality to hit a number; it is the foundation everything else stands on.
- Compare like with like: same opening schedule, same glazing build-up, same scope of installation and guarantees.
